CHALLENGE: The architect’s specification for South Baddesley School’s new build Ecological Discovery Centre (EDC) included the use of eco-friendly, innovative technologies, building fabrics and construction techniques. Along with other eco-technologies, they sought a method of introducing daylight that would meet their requirements for sustainability, lighting performance and innovation.
SOLUTION: Ten Solatube 290DS systems (350mm diameter) were installed into the Centre’s green sedum roof to provide natural light during the daytime to areas inside the building that suffered from a lack of natural light because they were not close to the windows.
"Providing as much natural daylight into the facade of the EDC was a pivotal decision-making exercise and we wanted to ensure only credible ECO suppliers and products were used on this project. The only Tubular Daylighting Systems which had BBA Certification were Solatube Daylighting Systems. This offered us the technical confidence we were looking for. Also, having studied the performance results, we felt this was the natural choice for specification on this project." Gary Lawrence, John Pardley Architects, Lymington
